As Director of the GE Portuguese Journal of Gastroenterology I wish, first of all, to assume that I consider this challenge a great honour and an appealing motivation. The ambition of the present editorial team matches the ideals that have always guided my personal view of this publication. This is the only publication exclusively dedicated to Gastroenterology in Portugal, which is exceedingly important for Portuguese gastroenterologists as a way of publishing their work, expressing their opinion, making themselves known scientifically. Keeping this in mind, an increasing investment and great ambition are fundamental. It is clearly with this spirit that we all have been working, looking forward to attain the indexation of our journal in the PubMed, which is expected to be attempted during the next year, and that we consider essential. Meanwhile, looking at the importance that this publication has already achieved and ultimately will have in the near future for national gastroenterology and gastroenterologists, it is almost a professional duty that everyone is called to embrace, submitting their work for publication, reviewing the articles on a timely manner when requested, promoting the journal among their peers. Undoubtedly, if this is successfully achieved, together with many international authors that have been collaborating with us and the current Editorial Board, the quantitative and qualitative improvement that we have been witnessing will be increasingly notorious and our goals will certainly be met. This will ultimately contribute for the affirmation of Portuguese gastroenterology, either at national and international levels, and will stand as an element of prestige for all of us. This is a short term goal within our reach. Portuguese gastroenterologists will surely rise up for the challenge.
