The schooltextbook and the student’ curiosity for knowledge. Pedagogical strategies in Portuguese school textbooks – grades 7th and 10th

The school text book and the student’s curiosity for knowledge. Pedagogical strategies in Portuguese school textbooks – grades 7th and 10th investigates the possibility for the awakening of the student curiosity by school textbooks’ activities, thus stimulating learning, autonomy and critical thinking, because “school textbook is, by far, the most efficient and popular tool for learning” (Gerard & Roegiers,1998, p.15). By means of a qualitative approach, from ‘problematic situations’ framed on a curriculum by ‘competences’, and focused on the ‘High Education Reform’, 2004/ ‘Basic Curricular Reorganization’, 2001’ textbooks, we conducted semi direct interviews/ questionnaires (teachers/ students) and classroom observations in public schools. Departing from legislative guidelines, confirmed or infirmed, we aim to rethink the interpretation and monitoring of curriculum and analysis of the organizational models of educational practices in this school textbooks’ route.Data findings lead us towards the need for a critical thinking concerning the development of autonomy to develop long lasting leanings using the proposed activities of school textbooks, either in classroom or as homework, regarding the student’s curiosity. Thus, we hope this investigation will contribute to the rethinking of practices mainly in the learning-teaching process in the Portuguese domain.

A educação conta?

The education counts? Vocational education and strategies of social mobility in young of the cities of Barcelona and Lisbon. A comparative study

This research argues in a key problem. Vocational education is used by young people in Barcelona and Lisbon, as means of social mobility strategy? How is represented socially and culturally, vocational education of young people in Barcelona and Lisbon? Based on this problem we intend to research the history of the students, know who they are, what their expectations before the training they receive and how schools reproduce, in each country, the vocational education. We argue that different social and cultural fields in a given population are used symbolically as a way of strategy to acquire or maintain different social and economic capital. Being situated the research in the context of local, national and European in economic crisis, its influence on the world of labour and access to first job, we triedto determine the expectations of these young people facing a future that foretells confused, in a society that everyday seems to change. The school system itself promotes class distinctions and thereby legitimizes the choice of a type of education, affecting the destiny of young people, binding them to a habitus, created not only by the school but also by social and family capital. In this sense, it is entirely appropriate, both from a theoretical and empirical perspective, both from a practical standpoint, evaluating the effects of vocational education at the level of the concept of work and education. This investigation also aims to contribute to the knowledge of the concept of work by these young people and their relationship with vocational education, discussing the theories of cultural reproduction from the relationships that are established in this way of education between the cultural capital received and the cultural capital acquired. Our strategy for implementing the methodology was by explanatory sequence which is used as a mixed structure of methods, permitting conduct a multivariate analysis, which presents four studies that allowed to contribute to the knowledge of the relationship of educational values and life values among the youth of the two samples. The analysis has allowed exposing different archetypes, social and cultural representations of this type of education by highlighting the distinction of the value placed on work and education in both cities studied.
