As mulheres e o atendimento médico. Salvador- Bahia (1850-1888)

Este trabalho se insere no campo da história social e, mais especificamente, nos estudos sobre a mulher no século XIX. Assim, tem por objetivo discutir a assistência médica às mulheres na Bahia (Brasil) tendo como recorte temporal o período de 1850 a 1888. Essa discussão insere-se numa agenda política atual no momento em que revela as práticas médicas aplicadas àquelas mulheres que buscaram atendimento na Santa Casa de Misericórdia.

O intuito de estudar a história do atendimento às mulheres no Hospital da Caridade da Bhia é desvendar as intricadas relações entre a mulher, seu corpo e o saber médico através da identificação das doenças, das rotinas clínicas, dos medicamento, do ambiente onde se processavam os tratamentos e da ação dos médicos neste contexto. Para responder às questões propostas foram explorados os registros do século XIX da Santa Casa de Misericórdia da Bahia, pelo caráter ilustrativo e panorâmico da condição da saúde feminina e da fala das autoridades em saúde nos artigos da Gazeta Médica.

Women and medical assistance. Salvador da Baía (1850-1888)

This work is part of the field of social history and, more specifically, the studies on women in 19th century. Thus its objective is to discuss medical assistance to women in Bahia (Brazil) having as a time window the period from 1850 to 1888. This discussion should be inserted in a current political agenda when it discloses the medical practice applied to those women who had seeked medical attendance at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia.

The aim of studying the history of the medical care given to the women in the Hospital of Charity (Hospital da Caridade) of Bahia is to unmask the intricate relations between women, their bodies and medical knowledge through the identification of the illnesses, of clinical routines, the medicines, the environment where treatments were processed, and the action of the doctors in this context To answer the questions proposed the 19th- century registers of the Santa Casa de Misericórdia have been analysed due to their illustrative character and panoramic view of the condition of the feminine health and of the testimony of the health authorities in articles of the Medical Cazette (Gazeta Médica).
