The Journal of Nursing Reference for 20 years: Continuously closer to you

The edition of the Journal of Nursing Referência (RER) is an essential initiative of the Strategic Development Axis for Edition and Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge, of the Health Sciences Research Unit: Nursing (UICISA: E), at the Nursing School of Coimbra (ESEnfC).

The RER was first published in January 1998, with the designation of Referência: Journal of Education and Training in Nursing at the Nursing School Dr. Ângelo da Fonseca, being awarded the ISSN (print version): 0874.0283.

Between 1998 and 2004, 13 editions were published, which constituted Series I. In 2004, the UICISA: E, hosted by the ESEnfC, was accredited by the Foundation for Science and Technology and, considering that one of its primary goals was the production of scientific knowledge, takes on the responsibility for editing RER (now part of the Strategic Development Axis for the Edition and Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge).

In 2005, the Series II began, named Referência: Scientific Journal of the Health Sciences Research Unit: Field of Nursing. The RER developed a blind review process, adjusting its criteria to the level of international dissemination journals and database requirements.

In 2006, an important indexation journey begins: the RER is indexed in CINAHL, EBSCO HOST, enters CUIDEN, is accessible in Hemeroteca CANTÁRIDA, and becomes a member of the Consejo Iberoamericano de Editores de Revistas de Enfermería (CIBERE), of Fundación Index, and is also indexed in Latindex (Sistema Regional de Información en Línea para Revistas Científicas de América Latina, el Caribe, España y Portugal). Also in 2006, the journal achieves another critical milestone: accessibility in full text on the journal’s webpage: https://rr.esenfc.pt/rr/.

In 2007, it was classified in QUALIS by Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – CAPES, culminating, in 2009, with the admission to SciELO Portugal, beginning then to use the metadata in HTML format.

In 2010, the RER began the Series III and was renamed Journal of Nursing Referência (Revista de Enfermagem Referência), with a new cover image, a new logo, and a new presentation on the webpage.

In 2012, the journal received the Digital Object Identifier (DOI), Crossref, a standard for the identification of digital documents.

In 2014, the Series IV started, with relevant changes for continuous improvement of editorial policies. It adopted the publication with quarterly periodicity; is accessible in full text, bilingual version, in digital format in CUIDEN, CINAHL, Latindex, SciELO, SciELO Citation Index - Web of Science, Thomson Reuters, and the journal’s webpage at http://www.esenfc.pt/site/index.php?module=rr&target=showPublications; adhered to APA (American Psychological Association) standards; offered topics of critical analysis, based on the specific article categories; and started monitoring the peer review process through an electronic platform, that integrates 10 dynamic phases; the ethics certification; and the fulfilment of the criteria for editing in Open Access. With these changes we achieved another milestone in 2014, the indexation in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ); registered deposit policy in SHERPA/ROMEO; policy on preservation of electronic records in PORTICO; and policy of use, distribution, and reproduction with a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 – International License (CC BY), which culminated, in 2015, with the indexing in ProQuest and Redalyc databases. In this same year, the ISSNe (electronic version): 2182.2883 was attributed to the RER, and the journal started to use iThenticate, the professional plagiarism detection software.

In 2017, the use of XML-JATS (Redalyc) begins, and the RER was admitted to REDEdit and Virtual Health Library.

In 2018, the RER celebrated its 20th anniversary, with 54 issues and a total of 701 published articles. Over these 20 years, the Journal of Nursing Referência, by the hand of his Editor-in-Chief, Professor Manuel Rodrigues, tenaciously sought to ensure that the scientific and technical information disseminated by the RER was accurate, valid, socially useful, accessible, and complying with the highest ethical principles. This way, its essential purpose is to disseminate scientific knowledge produced in nursing, with an interdisciplinary approach encompassing education, life sciences, and health sciences.

In this context, it is also important to highlight the admirable work of the editorial team, which with a high sense of responsibility and commitment respond to the constant requests so they can meet the objectives of the RER, constituting an essential cornerstone of the journal.

At the same time, pursuing the ambition to increase its visibility among the various scientific journals, its editor-in-chief was always an example by promoting a culture of a pedagogical and inclusive mission of both authors and readers. With these visionary and encouraging assumptions, we develop our passion for scientific editing and the strong and determined commitment to be involved in this vast project, converging both movements, competitiveness and collaborative action without profit.

I am honored to have followed this path in recent years, and welcoming now, as Editor-in-Chief, the RER, acknowledged as an essential means of scientific dissemination, nationally and internationally celebrated.

We share now with you all a new and important acquisition, resulting from the efforts of all (editors, authors, reviewers, readers): the Journal of Nursing Referência was admitted to Scopus - SJR. It is an excellent achievement for the UICISA: E and the ESEnfC.

It is with great joy, enthusiasm, and responsibility which we share the assessments concerning the evaluation report and their respective indicators, which state that:

The journal has increased its citations in Scopus journals and also there is a growing level of citation for many of these papers. It is clear evidence of the value placed on its scholarship by the nursing community worldwide. Its accessibility by an international research community is also supported by the enhanced English language developments and the editorial team as a whole is to be highly commended for these major initiatives.

In addition, the overall journal evaluation process states that the RER consistently includes articles, scientifically sound and relevant to an international academic or professional audience in this field; has scholarly relevance as evidenced by citations in other journals currently covered by Scopus; the abstracts are generally clear, provide an excellent summary of each article’s content, and comply with Scopus English Language requirements; the articles’ content is consistent with the scope and aims of the journal, of high academic quality, well-written, and understandable; the journal has clear aims and scope/journal policies consistent with the journal’s content; peer review type is clearly stated and is supported by appropriate reviewer guidelines; and the increasing citations and increasing citation of articles are evident.

We cannot remain indifferent to these assessments, which fill us with joy and enthusiasm. We hope to continue this work, with the whole team. Therefore, we invite you all to be involved in the development of an ever stronger, more visible, and more accessible RER. We count with all readers, reviewers, editors, for the construction of a journal more modern, and closer to each one of you.

This year, the RER will no longer be edited in physical format, responding to the challenge of an EcoGreen institution, and will only be disseminated in electronic format (https://rr.esenfc.pt/rr/; ISSNe: 2182.2883).

Considering the relevance of technology for the dissemination and accessibility of people to the knowledge, we need to pursue these challenges: How to deliver more rapidly the knowledge produced by RER: to students, nurses and citizens?

The commitment of the Journal of Nursing Referência will remain “Continuously closer to you.”
