I can’t resist reminding a very popular tale that calls for reflection on the relationship between “wisdom” and “knowledge”.

“… A man left 17 camels to his three sons. His will stated that the first son should get half of the camels; the second son should get one-third and the third son one-ninth.

All three sons got into a heated argument as they tried to divide the camels. When they realized it wasn’t possible, they decided to go to an erudite mathematician, but he couldn’t find the solution. Then someone suggested they should find a person with a long experience in camels, not a mathematician. They found a man quite old with much knowledge gained from experience. When they told him their problem, the experienced camel caregiver laughed and said that the solution was very easy. Here’s one of my camels, you now have 18 camels. Let us honour your father’s wish and divide the camels: the oldest son took his 9 camels, half of the herd; the middle son took his 6 camels, one third of the herd; and the youngest son took his 2 camels, one ninth of the herd. All were happy. But there was one camel left, which the generous and wise camel caregiver took back.” (“Words Like Fire” Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh)

This parabola highlights the value of useful reasoning and practical action in decision-making. However complex the research evidences, it is always possible to transform and present them in a clear and precise language. Abstract thinking can become practical and close to the reader’s experience.

This editorial is dedicated to all those who are engaged in communicating science with simple wisdom, especially when they use the shortest time to say the essential, or write words of wisdom in a nutshell.
