Palavras-chave: Adaptação à Universidade, estudantes do primeiro ano, relacionamento com pares, bem-estar pessoal, equilíbrio emocional.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we present the test of a non-recursive complete structural model representing the interaction between peer relationships (RI), emotional equilibrium (EE) and personal well-being (B-E) in freshman students of the University of Minho (convenience sampling). Constructs were operationalized through the Escala de Integração Social no Ensino Superior (EISES: Diniz & Almeida, 2005) College Social Integration Scale (CSIS). Data was collected from students that freely participated in the study (N=283), both in the first semester and at the end of the second semester. The model’s identity test (LISREL8-SIMPLIS) showed that it was plausible to describe the phenomenon in question. Nevertheless, a goodness of fit degradation occurred from the first to the second assessment moment, indicating a change of process that was revealed by substantive aspects in the model. The importance initially attributed to RI was mitigated at the end of the second semester, when the EE becomes more important. This indicates that different intervention strategies seem to be desirable in this period of time.

Key words: Adaptation to college, freshman students, peer relationships, personal well-being, emotional equilibrium.
