ABSTRACT

After a brief historical analysis of the theoretical models underlying early intervention programmes, we made a review of the types studies that have been made to evaluate their efficacy in what concerns children and families.

We express our concern regarding the lack of legislation on early intervention in our country and we refer with some detail the two unique early intervention evaluation studies that have been published in Portugal.

We point out some of the research questions that need urgently to be answered in order to evaluate the concepts and practices of early intervention projects that have been recently implemented in Portugal. We also enhance the importance of evaluating parental satisfaction, parental perceptions on the services that are actually being provided by the programmes, and compare these measures with the professionals view of the types of service activities that are necessary for an effective early intervention program.

Key words: Early intervention, program evaluation.
