Emigração, retorno e reemigração na primeira metade do século XX

Esta investigação compara os valores da emigração legal e do saldo migratório em Portugal entre 1890 e 1970. A diferença entre estes dois indicadores de movimentos migratórios é indiciadora da importância comparativa de movimentos não contabilizados nas estatísticas oficiais: o retorno, a reemigração, a emigração clandestina e o movimento com as colónias. Esta análise aponta para o predomínio do retorno e da reemigração até 1940 e para a maior importância da emigração clandestina e das saídas para as colónias desde aí.

Emigration, retour et réémigration au cours de la première moitié du XXe siècle

C’est une recherche qui compare les chiffres de l’émigration légale avec le solde migratoire du Portugal entre 1890 et 1970. La différence entre ces deux indicateurs de mouvements migratoires dénonce l’importance comparative de mouvements non comptabilisés dans les statistiques officielles: le retour, la réémigration, l’émigration clandestine et le mouvement vers les colonies. L’analyse montre une prédominance du retour et de la réémigration jusqu’à 1940 et, depuis lors, une plus grande importance de l’émigration clandestine et des départs sur les colonies.

Emigration, return and re-emigration in the first half of the twentieth century

This research compares legal emigration and net migration in Portugal between 1890 and 1970. The difference between these migration indicators shows the relative significance of movements unaccounted for in the official statistics: return, re-emigration, illegal emigration, and movements to and from the colonies. This analysis suggests that return and re-emigration were more significant up to 1940, and that since that time illegal emigration and departures to the colonies have taken over.
