Abstract

SILVA, Hélia Cristina Tirano Tomás  and  LOURENCO, Tiago Borges. From Island to Archipelago: The history of the site of the large block where the Hospital Real de Todos-os-Santos once stood (1834-2019). Cadernos do Arquivo Municipal [online]. 2019, vol.ser2, n.11, pp.127-143. ISSN 2183-3176.

The transference of the Hospital Real de Todos-os-Santos to the former Jesuit College of Santo Antão in 1775 and the suppression of the Convent of São Domingos in 1834 deeply changed the urban morphology of the site of the large block once known as the island where the Royal Hospital stands. It allowed an out of time expansion of the mid-18th century Baixa Pombalina plan that was ultimately essential to a straighter connection to the new neighborhoods developed in the northern part of the city during the 20th century.

Keywords : Lisbon; Urbanism; Architecture; Figueira Square; Hospital Real de Todos-os-Santos.
