Abstract

MACHADO, Marcello De Barros Tomé. Social Fear and Tourism in Rio de Janeiro. TMStudies [online]. 2012, n.8, pp.48-54. ISSN 2182-8458.

As they break from their usual surroundings, tourists are seeking personal satisfaction through otherness provided by the travel and stay in the destination chosen. The definition of the target occurs through the perception of the motivating factors that encourage positive displacement tour. However, it is also taken into account the limiting factors that negatively influence the choice of location as a destination. A limiting factor relevant and decisive in choosing a destination is the social fear, fear characterized as socially constructed and that affects the community, leading people to a diffuse sense of fear and requires an ability to anticipate what usually happens when the man is away from their usual environment for fear of violence and crime. Cities that have images related to violence and crime would be prevented from establishing themselves as major tourist destinations motivated by its violent stereotype? To elucidate this question we used the city of Rio de Janeiro as empirical example for this research, preliminary results indicate that a stereotype related to fear and violence hinders but does not prevent the development of tourism.
