Abstract

The Portuguese Association of Nutritionists was created in 1982 aiming to support the statement of Nutritionists profession within the different organizations in the health area, between other professional classes, and also in the population, once it represents a very recent profession, whose first course had been created in 1975. Over three decades of existence, the Association has developed several activities in order to demonstrate the importance of food and nutrition on the health of the population, but especially underlining the central role of the Nutritionist in this process. The purposes of this article were, to identify the major episodes of this period, in which the Portuguese Association of Nutritionists worked, undertook and innovated, as well as to register the main steps towards the benefit of the profession of Nutritionist in Portugal, bringing visibility to it, and enhancing its credibility and its importance in the society at the national and international levels.
