Abstract

CORREIO, Sandra Franco Afonso. The importance of neurodevelopmental surveillance in portuguese consultation of children and juvenile health. Rev Port Med Geral Fam [online]. 2020, vol.36, n.2, pp.215-220. ISSN 2182-5173.  https://doi.org/10.32385/rpmgf.v36i2.12501.

Neurodevelopmental disorders have become progressively more relevant in recent times, being a pertinent and current subject in the health care of children and young people. In Portugal routine child surveillance is performed by primary care clinicians, without specific training in this area. This article aims to raise awareness of the relevant aspects of neurodevelopmental surveillance, whose main objective is to enable children and young people to reach their maximum potential. The regular screening of developmental domains will help in identifying children at risk, promoting appropriate referrals, and adequate and early interventions.

Keywords : Neurodevelopment; Surveillance; Screening; Primary health care.
