Abstract

Through a critical and reflective analysis of the book Democracy and education (Dewey, 2007), with particular attention to the concept of democratic education, we intend to reflect on the issues of democracy in the nowadays childhood education in Portugal. The main issues addressed focus on educational policies and management practices in the context of daycare. After the analysis, we found that it is necessary to recognize education from zero to three years as the first stage of education and this should be understood as a basis for lifelong learning and a decisive factor in the development of a democratic society.
