Abstract

DIAS, Alfredo Gomes. History and Development of Competences in Basic Education: The experience from the Higher School of Education of Lisbon. Invest. Práticas [online]. 2017, vol.7, n.1, pp.63-90. ISSN 2182-1372.

In recent years, especially with the establishment of the Master’s Degree in Teaching in the 1st and in the 2nd Cycles of Basic Education, the study and reflection on the history of basic education teacher’s initial training have been in-depth. From this work, which has been developed in the scientific field of the Social Studies (Social Sciences and Humanities Department from the Higher School of Education of Lisbon) relevant changes arose concerning the educational plans of the Degree in Basic Education and of the Master’s Degree in Teaching in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education and Portuguese and History and Geography of Portugal in the 2nd Cycle of Basic Education, and, moreover, in the curricular units’ contents and methodologies. These changes focus on a pedagogical-didactic approach that kicks off from a conception of historical education that lays in two fundamental premises: (i) the competences to develop in the basic education’s classroom emerge from the guidelines of the construction of historical knowledge; (ii) the teaching-learning process of history must favour the development of historically competent students. In this sense, we put forward (a) the analysis, from an epistemological perspective, of the construction process of the historical operation; (b) the definition of the essential competences to develop in the disciplinary area of basic education; (c) the reflection upon some of the results that have been achieved in the training from the Higher School of Education of Lisbon, from the monitoring of the supervision of pedagogical practice.

Keywords : historical knowledge; historical education; competences.
