Abstract

FERNANDES, André  and  SOUSA, João. The definition of riverfront: contribution to a conceptual and spatial delimitation. GOT [online]. 2016, n.10, pp.113-131. ISSN 2182-1267.  https://doi.org/10.17127/got/2016.10.006.

Riverfronts have been assumed as prime locations for implementation of urban projects aimed to create conditions that would promote their revitalization and reappropriation. However, the absence of formal vocabulary which could be applied to these specific physical and geographical units results in difficulties of conceptual and spatial delimitation of these spaces. Acknowledging this aspect, the article discusses the need to clarify the concept of riverfront and presents a proposal for an applied delimitation, based on the assumption of a spatial scope backed up by different criteria, depending on the land use of these territories, namely (i) urban spaces, or (ii) natural, agricultural, agroforestry and urban green spaces. Based on this delimitation, the article implements the concept by applying it to the case of the South bank of the Tagus Estuary.

Keywords : waterfront; riverfront; riverine area; riverine space; Tagus Estuary.
