Abstract

BACKGROUND: Depression is characterized as one of the most prevalent diseases in the world population, which confers a public health problem for the population, including among university students. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the symptoms of anxiety and depression and the use of medication in university students. METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional study of quantitative analysis was carried out. The studied population were the university students of the health area of ​​a private college located in the north of Minas Gerais. A questionnaire was used to verify the symptoms of depression and anxiety and the use of medication among university students. RESULTS: A total of 292 students, 20 and 30 years of age, participated in the study. The symptoms of depression and anxiety were identified in 52.3% (n = 153) and 41.1% (n = 120) of the participants, respectively. It was observed that 5.3% of university students use drugs to treat these symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Depression and anxiety are prevalent mood disorders among college students and, therefore, the importance of follow-up and treatment measures.
