Abstract

SILVA, Daniel et al. Victims and aggressors: bullying manifestations in students from 6th to the 9th grade schooling. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2017, n.spe5, pp.57-62. ISSN 1647-2160.  https://doi.org/10.19131/rpesm.0168.

BACKGROUND: School violence is a transversal reality in all countries, which can take on many forms, some of which with certain danger. The school should be watchful to situations of violence, seeking to prevent and intervene in a timely manner. AIMS: To evaluate the existence and forms of bullying manifestations in students from 6th to 9th grade schooling and to identify variables which may influence bullying behaviour. METHODS: Transversal, exploratory-descriptive and correlational study with a quantitative approach in a sample of 156 students. RESULTS: The majority are female (60.9%) with a mean age of 12.87 years. Relationship with the family is good (76.3%) and 36.5% of the students have already failed. 64.1% of the students had disciplinary participation, 10.9% were suspended from school activities and 85.3% of parents rarely come to school. All students have, at one time, been bully victims and bully abusers. Girls suffer direct bullying more and use indirect bullying and intimidation more. Those who have failed show higher values in all forms of bullying. There is a connection between disciplinary participation and direct bullying. CONCLUSIONS: All students have already been bullied and have also been bullies. Boys resort more to direct bullying and girls to indirect bullying and intimidation. Students who have failed show higher levels of bullying. Students with good family relationships have fewer bullying behaviors. It is important to know the reality of each school regarding bullying behavior and carry out programmes of prevention and early intervention, in partnership with the family.
