BACKGROUND: New summons were presented to the work process of the nursing team by the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform aiming at the enhancement of the therapeutic relationship, increasing listening skills and dialogue with users. AIM: To analyze the process of Permanent Education (PE) in a psychiatric hospital, from the dynamics of the nursing team work. METHODS: This is a descriptive and qualitative research, of the intervention type, in which observation, field diary, and group monitoring were employed. The study included 27 people, mostly nurses and nursing technicians who attended the PE group, in the period from October 2012 to April 2013, totalling eight meetings. The inclusion criteria of the participants were: to be legally employed in the hospital; work in the nursing profession for more than one year; regularly attend the space of the discussion group. Exclusion criteria were: professionals with no experience in the field of mental health and external professionals to the hospital. The data were submitted to thematic content analysis. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Antônio Pedro, Fluminense Federal University, and was approved under No. 125,286. RESULTS: After analyzing the material were listed the following categories: (i) being heard; (ii) The dynamic process of health work.
