BACKGROUND: Insomnia is prevalent among nursing students relating with several factors, highlighting the complexity and curriculum requirements, especially during the clinical training. AIM: To determine the prevalence of insomnia of students in clinical training; Identify the sociodemographic and academic variables that interfere with insomnia of the students during the clinical training; List the lifestyles, the roulement system, sleephabits and chronic fatigue with the occurrence insomnia. METHODS: Quantitative, cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational-analytical study conducted in a non-probability convenience sample consisting of 181 nursing students who have already performed clinical training. A questionnaire on sociodemographic characterization, identification questionnaire lifestyles of students and shift work was aplied; Sleepquestionnaire Oviedo (QSO); Index of SleepQuality Pittsburgh (PSQI). RESULTS: The insomnia was associated with unhealthy life, older students, female, urban residents in the 4th year attending the 8th semester, with worker-student status, living alone for the stage and those who have done roulement system. Of the variables studied revealed that the statistical significance are age, the half, the aging time in cohabitation, cigarette smoking, drug use, the presence of television / computer in the room and the roulement system. CONCLUSION: Given that the prevalence of insomnia was 22.1% think is useful to continue this study with a more dilated sample in order not to compromise the external validity, allowing extrapolation of the results to the student population nursing clinical education.
