CABRAL, Lídia do Rosário et al. The crisis situation in Portugal and the mental health of health professionals. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2016, n.spe3, pp.57-62. ISSN 1647-2160.  https://doi.org/10.19131/rpesm.0118.

BACKGROUND: The impact of the economic crisis is felt in labour relations exerting influence on satisfaction and the mental health of health professionals, leading to demotivation, anguish, anxiety, sadness, depression and feelings of loneliness AIM: Analyze the relationshipbetween the economic situation and the mental health of health professionals; identify the socio demographic and professional context variables that affect the mental health of health professionals. METHODS: Quantitative study, transversal, descriptive and correlational. The questionnaire was used to characterize socio demographic and economic situation and the Mental Health Inventory. The sample consisted of 116 health professionals. RESULTS: Women are in majority, the prevailing groupis between ages of 28 and 34 years, residing in rural areas, with higher education, .having a fixed-term contract with the employing institution The majority (92.1%) admits that the economic crisis has affected them by means of wage cuts and labour instability, during last year 61.5% reported anxiety and 47.7% a feeling of sadness. The age and the profession interfered with lack of mental health. The youngest and the nurses were the ones to perceive lower values of mental health. CONCLUSION: The economic situation was assumed as predictive of mental health in an inverse relation with the Mental Health Inventory dimensions, meaning, the worse the economic situation, the greater values of mental health inventory (anxiety, depression, loss of control, positive affect and emotional ties).
