BACKGROUND: Although as not been demonstrated a causal relationship between a limited health literacy and health-promoting behaviors, results of research allows to affirm that the development of health literacy acknowledge the promotion of this type of behavior. AIM: It was intended to know the levels of health literacy and health-promoting behaviour in stress management on a sample of Portuguese adolescents, as well as the impact of health literacy on health-promoting behaviors in stress management, on the same sample. METHODS: It was held a quantitative study, descriptive-corelational and transversal. The sample selected included 1215 adolescents, aged between 14 and 20 years, of both sexes, attending secondary school in the District of Leiria. The data was collected through a self-fill questionnaire, consisting of demographic questions, the Adolescent Health Promotion Scale and the assessment tool of health literacy. RESULTS: It has been discovered good levels of health literacy and health-promoting behaviour in stress management in the sample. Statistically significant correlations have been found between the two concepts, being part of the variance of the behaviors health promoters in stress management explained by health literacy levels in this area. CONCLUSIONS: The sample presents good levels of health literacy and health-promoting behaviors in managing stress, having been found a causal link between the concepts in the studied group.
