BACKGROUND: The literature has shown training programs as an important strategy for the development of social skills. Despite health education be an activity undertaken by nurses frankly, there are few studies that investigate the design of training programs such as social skills intervention performed by nurses. AIM: Create an intervention program for adolescents in order to modify and / or improve social skills assertiveness, self-control, cooperation and empathy, responding to previously identified difficulties. METHODS: The present study formed part two primary and complementary studies, following a temporal sequential logic. The first (quantitative approach) allowed the identification of deficits in social skills of adolescents. The second (qualitative approach) allowed us to identify what factors contribute to the existence of deficits. Analysis and discussion of these results and a thorough literature review a program of specific intervention was constructed and appropriate for the type of population defined target population - teenagers. RESULTS: The program 'Improving skills with others'. CONCLUSIONS: It can be said that this study contributes to the theoretical development of cognitive-behavioral models in the context of nursing intervention with adolescents, based on a humanistic approach and allows the application of knowledge in action. These programs are key elements for their development and personal / professional skills of nurses include characteristics relating particularly to the trainer, specialist nurses in Mental Health Nursing.
