INTRODUCTION: Sleep is a quality-of-life indicator, when restorative processes occur. Institutionalization hospital procedures disturb sleep processes. Due to the need for research in this field, the aim of the study is to analyze sleep quality, sleepiness, circadian rhythm and comfort level, as well as associated factors in institutionalized patients in two hospitals in Murcia (Spain). METHODOLOGY: Quantitative, transversal and descriptive study. A patient questionnaire was created, analyzing body mass index (BMI), smoking habit, sleep quality (Pittsburgh Index) and daytime sleepiness (Epworth scale) using basic descriptive statistics and bivariate analysis with Pearson's correlation. RESULTS: 100% of patients have poor sleep quality. Furthermore, patients with obesity are harder smokers (R = 0.634 with p <0.001) and have poorer sleep quality (R = 0.339 with p = 0.04). 70.3% have daytime sleepiness from moderate to severe. DISCUSSION: The smoking habit in hospitalized subjects increases discomfort. Hospitalization disturbs sleep and increases daytime sleepiness. CONCLUSIONS: Hospitalization, as well as BMI and smoking, are related to the appearance of a poor sleep quality. Maintaining a good sleep quality in hospitals is one of the health challenges of the future.
