COELHO, Maria Teresa Vieira  e  SEQUEIRA, Carlos. Therapeutic communication in nursing: How it is characterized by nurses. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2014, n.11, pp.31-38. ISSN 1647-2160.

CONTEXT: Therapeutic communication used deliberately in care provision is still a challenge to some nurses. Essential to nursing, therapeutic communication is a conscious process that, in an intentional way, allows identification and response to the needs of each person and simultaneously contributes to the improvement of nursing practice. It is presented in this article part of the results of the thesis developed under the doctorate, with the purpose of characterizing the items which integrate therapeutic communication. METHODOLOGY: It is a study of quantitative, exploratory and descriptive focus. The data was obtained with an online survey application, with the collaboration of the Portuguese Nursing Order, to which 448 nurses responded. RESULTS: Over 90% of the inquired state that therapeutic communication is necessary in more than just psychotherapeutic interventions and 54% agree that all communication used by a nurse is therapeutic communication. Almost all the inquired nurses agree with most of the characterizing aspects of therapeutic communication and it is worth noting that respectively 23.5% and 35.6% don’t agree with the intentional use and autonomous clinical value of it. CONCLUSIONS: With the obtained results it is possible to identify a major agreement tendency in the inquired, holders of the specialist title by the Order, with more professional exercise time and a higher academic degree. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The results presented allow us to suggest the deepening of aspects related to therapeutic communication in nursing education what will reflect on the quality of care provided.
