PEREIRA, Ana Mónica et al. Burnout and work-family interaction among nurses: An exploratory study with the Survey Work-Home Interaction Nijmegen (SWING). Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2014, n.11, pp.24-30. ISSN 1647-2160.

Work and family are the main contexts in the contemporary society. Initially, studies focused on the negative perspective of the relation between work and family, especially in what concerns burnout eliciting. With the development of Positive Psychology, research focused on positive perspective of this relationship, despite the idea of bi-directionality. Due the demands of their professional activity, nurses are vulnerable to burnout and to work-family conflict. The Survey Work-Home Interaction Nijmegen (SWING, Geurts et al., 2005) measures this bi-directionality using both perspectives. This study aims to explore the psychometric properties of the SWING in a sample of nurses, and to know the prevalence of work-family interaction and her relation with burnout. Data were collected from 307 nurses working in Portuguese public hospitals and health centres, using SWING and Maslach Burnout Inventory. Nurses reported lower levels of burnout, more negative work-home interaction than negative home-work interaction, and more positive home-work interaction. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the four correlated factors model that distinguishes the direction of the interaction (work-home or home-work) and quality (negative or positive) provided best fit to the data. Portuguese version of SWING has good internal consistency and present significant correlations between SWING dimensions and burnout. The results show that this version of SWING has satisfactory psychometric properties, being an appropriate instrument to measure work-home interaction in Portuguese language and to better know the professional activity of nurses.
