The clinical training is a key component in the integration of knowledge and skill development of student nurses, forming a structural axis of socialization and professional identity construction. AIM: to understand the perspectives of students about clinical education in the context of mental health and psychiatry and skills developed during the same. METHODS: exploratory, quantitative study. Data collection from February 13th to April 30th, 2013. All ethical standards were observed. Socio-demographic characterization and assessment of student skills more developed was made using the Adaptive Competency Profile - ACP scale, validated to Portuguese. RESULTS: sample consisting of 48 students, 42 (87.5%) females, with M = 22.9 years (SD = 3.9). Reasons for choosing nursing course highlight vocation (42.6%), interest in health (34.4%) and previous contact with nursing as patients (23%). CONCLUSIONS: Students highlight the clinical education as an asset allowing them to confront the reality of the profession, providing them with work experience and preparation for the future. Relationship skills are considered most developed in context of clinical training in psychiatry, linked to concrete experience and reflective observation.
