Resumen

SOUSA, Maria Manuela et al. Prevalence of lipid and glycemic profile altered in patient with schizophrenia. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2014, n.spe1, pp.65-70. ISSN 1647-2160.

CONTEXT: Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) show significant abnormalities in lipid and glucose metabolism, which may be induced by antipsychotic (AP) therapy and the associated lifestyle. Risks of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome are increased in these patients, who present mortality rate from cardiovascular disease a 2 fold higher than general population. AIM: To analyze the prevalence of alterations in lipid and glycemic profiles and AP therapy in a sample of SCZ patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study on the records of lipid and glycemic profiles and AP therapy of SCZ patients from a mental health care unit, from 2009 to 2011. We selected for detailed study the cases that fulfilled the following criteria: presence of three cardiovascular risk factors, hyperglycemia and presence of three metabolic syndrome factors indicator. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 51 SCZ patients, of which we recorded 5 cases with cardiovascular risk factors, 6 with hyperglycemia indicating diabetes, 7 with laboratory factors indicators of metabolic syndrome. For these cases, we examined the antipsychotic agent. CONCLUSIONS: Data show the need for monitoring of metabolic side effects of AP therapy and the establishment of corrective measures, diet, lifestyle and therapeutic.
