The promotion of healthy interpersonal relationship through the development of social skills contributes to the well-being and mental health of people.  The training programs of social skills are intended, on the first place, to provide a set of experiences that have not occurred naturally over the life cycle, it becomes necessary to teach them or develop them. The nurses specialists in mental health are privileged agents in the design, implementation and evaluation of programs to promote social skills, whether one is in a situation of health or disease and in all life cycle phases. This literature review article appears with the aim of contributing to develop training programs for social skills, which addresses the theoretical aspects of knowledge in this specific area of Social Skills Training, particularly Assertive Training, forms of assessment of social skills, structure and dynamics of the sessions of a training program and some of the techniques and procedures commonly used. It highlighted the competences of the mental health nurse as a therapist/trainer.
