The awareness of the importance of the individual and his rights that occurred during the century XX prominently in the second half of the century has transformed our perspective in relation to the responses of services for people with mental illness. We come to value a more integrative and comprehensive intervention focused on mental health and less on psychiatric intervention. This change resulted in the reform of large psychiatric centres and the availability of community responses tailored to the needs of people with mental illness. This trend is also included in our National Mental Health Plan (Plano Nacional de Saúde Mental) and in design programmes and services for the psychosocial rehabilitation of people with severe mental illness (Cuidados Continuados Integrados para a Saúde Mental), which was inspired by relevant international experiences where there are points of contact with our sociological reality. The mental health reforms that have taken place in several countries and regions show that the options taken were influenced by social and political contexts determining differences in the models. Despite this, we can find common guiding principles that underpinned and enabled the construction of rehabilitative alternatives for people with severe mental illness.
