COELHO, Lénea Verde Martins. Competência Emocional em Professores: Contributos da Psicoeducação. Revista Portuguesa de Enfermagem de Saúde Mental [online]. 2012, n.8, pp.16-24. ISSN 1647-2160.

This quasi-experimental quantitative study, type pre-test post-test, involved a process of teachers’ education (psychoeducational intervention aimed to train teachers on emotional competence). The study was a purposive sample (N=6) teachers who taught on Escola Básica e Secundária de Ourém, in which it was applied MHI-5 and Escala Veiga Branco Capacidades da Inteligência Emocional (EVBCIE). The scales were applied before and after psychoeducational intervention. Underlies the construction of the EVBCIE and content psychoeducational intervention are founded on Goleman’s. The EVBCIE consists of five subscales: self-consciousness, managing emotions, motivation, empathy and managing emotions on group. The basic psychoeducational intervention consisted on eight weekly sessions on two months. It is verified that after psychoeducational intervention averages obtained at the level of mental health, self-awareness, managing emotions, motivation, empathy and managing emotions and group emotional competence (total) are higher than those before the intervention. After statistical analysis with Wilcoxon test for paired samples with significance level of p<0.05, it was found that the differences before and after intervention were statistically significant for the self-consciousness subscales (p=0.046), management of emotions (p=0.028), emotions management group (p=0.046) and for EVBCIE in total (p=0.046). The differences were not statistically significant at the level of mental health and self-motivation and empathy dimensions. In Portugal there are no quasi-experimental comparative studies. However, in Spain, Ibáñez and Alzina (2006) obtained improvements in coping of teachers and consequently in the interpersonal relationship with students in the classroom. The basic psychoeducational intervention used in this study allowed the process of teacher training that aimed to improve the quality of life and health. On future, the replication of this study will be required, as well as the use of a control group to strengthen the results.
