Abstract

JIMENEZ, Sebastián Molinillo; ILLESCAS, Rocío Aguilar  and  SANCHEZ, Rafael Anaya. Uderstanding the shopping behaviour of Malaga’s cruise tourists. Encontros Científicos [online]. 2010, n.6, pp.94-106. ISSN 1646-2408.

The cruise sector has recently become one of the fastest growing subsectors in the international tourism market. The city of Malaga has experienced this empowering tendency and, consequently, it has turned into a major port of stopovers and departures for cruises around the Mediterranean Sea. This new situation has translated into a substantial opportunity for all kinds of businesses around the city. This study aims to analyze the shopping behaviour of the cruise tourists so as to draw a profile which determines their major characteristics. The data analysis was based on univariate and bivariate estimations where discriminant function and CHAID (Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detector) modelling were the most fundamental tools of analysis. The most influential variables related to the shopping behaviour of the cruise tourist were sex and age. Additionally, we observed that there is a strong connection between catering and shopping activities.
