Abstract

MUNIZ, Diego Rodríguez-Toubes  and  BREA, José Antonio Fraiz. Crisis management in tourism: the emergency side of the sustainability. Encontros Científicos [online]. 2010, n.6, pp.49-58. ISSN 1646-2408.

When the management and long-term care of those involved in sustainable tourism development goes into a state of emergency we are in a crisis situation. In these situations, specific knowledge acquired in the field of crisis management in tourism can help to take advantage of the opportunities that they present to organizations and tourist businesses. The state of emergency caused by a crisis that impacts a tourist destination is an opportunity to meet the challenges of competitiveness and sustainability currently faced by tourist destinations. To make better use of these opportunities, previous preparation and a certain amount of anticipation is necessary, since it is in the reduction phase of the crisis that a series of warning signs or indicators must be established to act efficiently.  Three cases of good practices in tourist destinations affected by a negative event are analyzed. This can help to illustrate the idea and to show specific actions to be carried out.
