BAGUEIXA, Mónica AHL; PIMENTEL, Maria H  e  IGLESIAS, María JG. Fragilidade no idoso internado num Serviço de Ortopedia. Rev. Port. Ortop. Traum. [online]. 2017, vol.25, n.3, pp.173-184. ISSN 1646-2122.

Objectives: To explain the conceptual evolution of the concept of fragility; To determine the prevalence and profiles of frailty in patients hospitalized from the age of 65, applying some questionnaires available in the literature and to develop a quick application scale to evaluate the fragility of the elderly. Type of study: Descriptive, correlational and quantitative study. Population: Patients hospitalized in the Orthopedics Service at the Hospital Unit of Bragança of the Unidade Local de Saúde do Nordeste. Methods: We selected a sample of 355 elderly people, who were asked to collaborate to fill out a questionnaire prepared by the authors to evaluate the fragility in the hospitalized elderly. Results: The most independent elderly people in the basic activities of daily living (ABVD's) are more independent in the instrumental activities of daily living (AIVD's) and have a lower cognitive risk. The most independent elderly in the ABVD's present a lower risk of falling, lower depression and lower social risk. Conclusion: An elderly person is flagged weakly if: - Score obtained in the mini mental state examination (MMSE) less than or equal to 22 points (cognitive risk). We define this cut-off point because it is what is associated with the lowest educational level for the Portuguese population. - Barthel score overall score lower than 90 (some dependence on ABVD's) and intermediate or high social risk (score greater than 13 points on the Gijón scale) - Barthel score overall score lower than 90 (some dependency on ABVD's) and high risk of falls (scores higher than 51 points on the Morse scale).
