Abstract

Gunshot wounds occur more frequently in our society. The high cost of these injuries, since the initial approach until the treatment of their after-effects, has justifi ed the world wide publishing of various articles. The constant use to sophisticated fire arms by the police forces and the criminal groups in the major cities of Latin America, like Rio de Janeiro, has created statistics which can only be compared to war zones. The purpose of this article is to review the essential ballistic concepts for the military orthopedic surgeon plus the trauma and the guidelines to be address these traumatisms, in order to demystify the myths related to ammunition.
