BEZERRA, Flávia Helena Germano et al. Structural biomechanical evaluation of the column of rats subjected to movement restriction and recovery with swimming. Motri. [online]. 2018, vol.14, n.1, pp.341-345. ISSN 1646-107X.

Among the various resources used in orthopedics, immobilization is a tool commonly used in the treatment of bone and musculoskeletal injuries. The objective of the present study was to perform a structural biomechanical evaluation of the spine of rats submitted to immobilization and recovered with swimming training. Thirty-two female Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Control (CTR), Fixed Assets (I), Fixed Assets / Swimming (IN) and Swimming (NA). Immobilization occurred in the right hind limb, including the pelvis, hip, femur, knee (extension), tibia, and ankle (plantar flexion) for two weeks. Swimming training occurred for six days a week over two weeks. After this period the animals were sacrificed and the L6 and T13 vertebrae were dissected and the areas of interest were subsequently measured. The animals submitted to the immobilization model showed metrical changes in the vertebral column. The results emphasized that the movement restriction is not restricted to the immobilized region, but it can also affect other adjacent structures in a systemic way.
