ALBUQUERQUE, Natasha Vasconcelos; PASSOS, Tatiana Uchôa; LOPES, Synara Cavalcante  e  CASTRO, Nicolle Costa. Magnesium and zinc dietary intake of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Motri. [online]. 2018, vol.14, n.1, pp.190-195. ISSN 1646-107X.

This study analyzed the intake of magnesium and zinc in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM), aged 4 to 8 years. There was an investigation of food consumption through two 24-hour reminders, in which the dietary intake of magnesium and zinc was identified. The findings were compared with the recommendations of the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs). The study included children with a mean age of 6.5 ± 1.5 years, 45.0% female and 55.0% male, with an average of 2.7 ± 1.9 years after the time of diagnosis. In relation to food consumption, magnesium intake was 182.0±46.9 mg/day in girls and 154.3±68.1 mg/day in boys and zinc intake was 7.7±2.5 mg/day and 8.0±5.8 mg/day, respectively. Both patients had an intake that was possibly adequate for the 90.0% age group. Only two male patients were possibly inadequate as recommended by Estimated Average Requirement (EAR). It is known that the risks caused by such inappropriate consumption can lead to microvascular and macrovascular complications of DM. However, the majority of results indicate that the group has adequate consumption, which may be a consequence of the follow-up. And indicates more research is needed.
