Abstract

Portugal focused its tourism activity in a single product from the 60s: the traditional product, "Sun and Sea", better known for tourism of three "S" - Sun, Sea and Sand. The competitiveness with other countries such as Spain, Turkey, Greece, Tunisia, among others, that offer the same kind of products, alert us to the need for diversification of supply. To this end, the diversification of products as being made, first to combat the extreme dependence on tourism, "Sun and Sea," and by other side to harmonize the Portuguese territorial space. The "National Strategic Plan for Tourism 2006-2015 (PENT), is an example of that.The main purpose of this paper is the characterization of tourism in Portugal with regard to its economic importance, major inbound countries, tourism demand of new markets, seasonality, tourism products and perspectives.
