Abstract

SANTOS, Inês Guerra dos  and  PAULINO, Fernando Faria. O documentário etnográfico: da memória ao produto turístico. Tékhne [online]. 2010, n.14, pp.123-135. ISSN 1645-9911.

Tourism inevitably presupposes territorial activity and spatial movement. Landscape and environment are hence of vital importance for the success/ failure of a particular destination.  In addition, the public increasingly values the cultural aspect and the specificities of a certain region or event. In this context, the ethnographic documentary can play an important role in the articulation of material and immaterial, product and memory, whose reconstitution allows the retrieval of habits, customs and traditions. This study is based on a broader research project that culminates in the production of a documentary regarding the festivities of São João d´Arga - Alto Minho. The field study that leads to the production of the documentary associates the anthropological perspective to the audiovisual methodology and articulates the use of image with the testimonies of some participants: ordinary individuals whose memories are interesting to know. The aim of this paper is to analyse the role that the ethnographic documentary can play in the “construction” of touristic products as well as in their respective affirmation and valuation. In other words, we intend to stimulate the perception of the documentary not only as an entertainment and leisure instrument, but also as an agent capable of intentionally projecting an image, thus assuming a significant role in the “construction” of touristic products.

Keywords : Ethnographic Documentary; Culture; Memory and Touristic Products.
