The use of fiber reinforced plastics has increased in the last decades due to their unique properties. Advantages of their use are related with low weight, high strength and stiffness. Drilling of composite plates is a challenge to the industries related with these materials. Normally, machining can be carried out in conventional machinery with some adaptations. However, the presence of typical defects like delamination can severely affect mechanical properties of produced parts. In this paper, a technique for delamination measurement based on algorithms of Image Processing and Analysis is presented. This technique can be helpful in the evaluation of damage for the comparison of drilling parameters or tools. Conclusions show that damage minimization is an important mean to improve mechanical properties of joint areas of plates and the appropriateness of the algorithms of Image Processing and Analysis used.
