It is widely recognized that understanding the patterns of social and economic differentiation is crucial for an effective urban planning and development. This paper presents a socio-economic typology for the Metropolitan Area of Porto (MAP), using data from the last population and habitation census of 2001. To reduce the number of variables selected for the study, two statistical techniques of multivariate analysis were used: factor analysis and cluster analysis. The results are represented in cartograms so as to enable the identification of patterns and the visualization of the features of the spatial area under study. It is concluded that the spatial area is marked by contrasts. There is a sharp contrast between the involving areas of the Porto county and the outskirt counties of the MAP. The specificities of the Porto county and its differences with neighborhood counties are also highlighted.
