TEIXEIRA, Nuno Severiano. Three Unfinished Reflections on populism and democracy. Relações Internacionais [online]. 2018, n.59, pp.75-83. ISSN 1645-9199.  https://doi.org/10.23906/ri2018.59a06.

Populism is on the rise all over the world. The populist ideology, the populist parties, populist leaders, the populist style. In the political struggle as in the academic debate the topic became ubiquitous. On the other hand, liberal democracy, once triumphant, is today under attack and in global retreat. And democratization, political scientists considered a one-way process, proved, after all, a two-way process: the democracies consolidate, but can also deconsolidate. Under pressure of globalization, growing economic inequalities and identity fears are feeding the populist wave. And is this populist wave that using the democratic mechanisms causes the erosion of democracy. This article is a reflection on the relationship between democracy and populism, especially in the United States and Europe, seeking to understand its past causes and its future challenges.

Palavras-chave : Democracy; globalization; populism; West.
