This article aims to cover the first edition of Politics among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace, seminal work by Hans Morgenthau, with a dual purpose. On the one hand, to point out the main aspects and to highlight the objectives that it brought to the evolution of the discipline of International Relations; and, on the other hand, to seek to historically frame this work in its time, emphasizing the contributions it brought to the understanding of the bipolar competition between the United States and the Soviet Union.
