This paper seeks to contribute to the debates on the crisis of contemporary democracy by evoking two modern classics - Max Weber and Carl Schmitt - and a specific historical context - Weimar's late modernity. By sketching the troubled path from Max Weber's disillusioned liberalism to Carl Schmitt's totalitarian hopes, it suggests that modern democracy inhabits the critical and uncertain space between a double illusion.
