This paper identifies the key-challenges that energy systems will undergo in the next years, and draws a vision towards future power grids. Firstly, an overview on the role of power systems is carried out, in the scope of the energy transition. Operational problems are also sketched out, when it comes to managing power grids under the new energy paradigm (with new energy technologies and services). In the end, threats and opportunities for the national electrical system are raised. Although the complexity of building a smart and secure power grid, one concludes that the opportunities overcome the threats.
