The article deals with the reappearance of the Balkan stereotypes on the occasion of the first centenary of the Great War. Two recently published books which became bestsellers created much criticism in Serbian public opinion. Those are the works of professors Christopher Clark The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914, (2012) and Margaret MacMillan’s The War that Ended Peace: the Road to 1914 (2014). The books referred to many complex topics from the Balkan history in simplifying terms. On the other side the old images of “victimhood” as well as “conspiracy theories” were put forward by several representatives of the Serbian public scene. Besides, both sides referred to the 1990s Yugoslav wars when interpreting the 1914. Consequently, this case warns that the First Centenary of the Great War displays great potential for creating misunderstanding instead of constructive dialog.
