It is remarkable that an Alliance built to assure mutual defence remains relevant for such a long period, with so many changes in the international environment. This article analyses NATO’s evolution and succeeding transformations, as well as the several hesitations and dilemmas it still has to go through to reach the future. In addition, it highlights the role of Portugal, a founding member, throughout the last sixty years.
