BOAVISTA, Clara  e  SOUSA, Óscar de. The class head-Teacher: profile and skills. Rev. Lusófona de Educação [online]. 2013, n.23, pp.77-93. ISSN 1645-7250.

This inquiry aims at defining the profile of class manager in the context of the supervision of the School. Main objective of this work is to study which conceptions that the students and the Class Head-Teachers have in regard to Class Head- Teacher´s profile and functions as well as to analyze the competencies/skills that a School Principal requires most from a teacher chosen as Class Head-Teacher. Knowing that there is legislation which grants specific responsibilities to Class Head-Teacher, in the domain of the coordination, it is also intended to know if there exists any inconsistency between this legal attribution and its efficacy in practice. Furthermore, it is also intended to know if the profile required for a Class Head-Teacher, suits the school principal´s perspective, other class teachers and students. The chosen methodology was of a descriptive nature. We have chosen 198 students from the 9th grade (Junior-High) as target, from six different schools, from the Setúbal district, covering a total of nine classes, with their respective teachers, plus three public School Principals. Students and Class Head-Teachers have answered questionnaires and their responses, grading them on a scale of attitudes. We also used semi-structured interviews, which were sent to School Principals The main conclusion of this study reinforced the idea that Class Head-Teachers are seen as important in the School, even if they do not have the profile for this function. Yet pupils and Class Head-Teachers themselves do not recognize, in practice, their authority regarding their fellow teachers of the group. School Principals consider the position of Class Head-Teacher as charged with many responsibilities, although in practice the appointment of the Class Head-Teacher is often made without consideration of his training or lack of it, in the area of interpersonal relationships and mediation. As to the desired profile for a Class Head-Teacher, psychological qualities are considered more important than the physical one. In what concerns the skills the Class Head-Teachers should have, the School Directors consider that experience, capacity of leadership, dialogue, good relationship, tolerance and dedication are the most important priorities for the selection of a Class Head-Teacher. For his functions among students it should be noted that both, Class Head-Teacher and students regard “Mediation” as the main role. Even though, there is legislation that mentions, in detail, what are the administrative responsibilities and profile of the Class Head-Teacher. It is important to understand if the powers that are granted match the challenges the head-teachers face every day in the educational field.
