Abstract

Several studies have shown that only the improvement of manufacturing processes is not sufficient to reduce environmental problems. This article describes the evolution of solutions to reduce environmental impacts in the industrial sector and reinforce the importance of environmental management as an initial step. The article also provides the benefits of considering environmental issues during product development. Furthermore it defines products environmental management and how it can integrate competitiveness and environmental protection revealing the current landscape and future prospects for product development with lower environmental impact. In conclusion, it is possible to satisfy the desires and needs of consumers through cleaner industrial processes and environmental friendly products. In other words, it is possible to implement environmental aspects into product development and to improve at the same time the company's competitiveness.
