Abstract

COSTA, Ana Bénard da. Mozambicans in the Portuguese higher-education system: Trajectories, identities and social networks. Cadernos de Estudos Africanos [online]. 2012, n.23, pp.131-158. ISSN 1645-3794.

This article analyzes the individual and family trajectories of Mozambicans who have attended universities in Portugal. It seeks to understand the factors that have influenced their educational background and the impact that higher education in Portugal has had in terms of their identity formation. The paper also analyzes issues related to the cooperative social networks influencing their decision to pursue higher education in Portugal, their integration into Portuguese society, and their subsequent reintegration and professional careers in Mozambique. Finally, the article addresses the impact that higher education of Mozambicans in Portugal has had on the national development of Mozambique.
