Abstract

PATRAO, Ana Luísa  and  VASCONCELOS-RAPOSO, José. O Estado de Saúde da Ilha de Moçambique: Uma análise comparativa dos indicadores de saúde da população. Cadernos de Estudos Africanos [online]. 2011, n.21, pp.147-161. ISSN 1645-3794.

The United Nations Development Program ( PNUD ) refers to Mozambique as occupying the 165th place in terms of human development, within a range of 169 countries (2010). A study was conducted between 2004/2005, based on a sample of 500 persons. The goal was to analyse selected health indicators within the Island of Mozambique’s population, in order to compare them with the national rates. The results show that, in some aspects, the Island’s rates are lower than the national ones. However, it was also observed that certain variables revealed a more favourable situation within the Island of Mozambique. Generally speaking, then, we may conclude that human development is a serious problem in the Island. Healthwise, the population lacks the opportunities, as well as the means to improve this situation.

Keywords : human development; health indicators; Mozambique Island.
